Seed Coatings / Treatments:
Inoculating and Lime Pelleting involves applying inoculant (Rhizobium bacteria in a peat medium) to legumes and then coating them in a lime based coating to dry the inoculant onto the seed and protect the live bacteria as much as possible. Plastaid is the most commonly used product for this purpose.
This process has a drawback in that the viability of the bacteria in the inoculant deteriorates very quickly with an optimum life of only 3-4 weeks. As such, the inoculating and lime pelleting has to be done as close a spossible to the time of sowing.
To overcome the short "shelf life"of the above there have been developed some "long life seed coatings" such as Soweasy, Smartcote, Agricote and Superstrike. These processes have the advantage of extending the inoculant's life with most legume species.
Another treatment which we apply is Gaucho, an insecticide to assist attack Red Legged Earthmite on seed. During 2000 we were appointed as a licensed applicator for this treatment.
